How 3D Visualization with Connect Viewer Enhances Efficient Project Execution

A global engineering, projects, and operations client of MODS recently conducted a survey to gain insights into the true onsite sentiment of digital work packages. While enthusiasm for the increased efficiency delivered by digital work packages was undeniable, an in-house system lacked 3D capabilities.

Connect Viewer links live project data to the 3D model so teams can visualize work package, joint integrity, and completions status in real time.

In complex industrial projects, information alone – even digital – is often not enough. Project teams and stakeholders need to see work progress, joint safety, and test records in the context of the project at large.

A major takeaway from the survey was that onsite project teams wanted to be able to easily visualize project status and progress, with the ability to query and drill down from there as needed. Visual context of the project at large, as the survey confirmed, is immensely helpful in efficient project execution.

Connect Viewer, an integral feature of MODS Connect, brings this visibility, linking live project data from across digital work pack, integrity, and completions modules directly to the 3D project model. This enables users, both onsite and in office, to visualize status, progress, and constraints, in both real time and in the broader project environment.

Let’s look at the utility of using Connect Viewer for managing work package, project joint, and completions workflows.

Work Package Planning, Control, and Real-Time Progress Insights

Connect Viewer allows teams to visually plan, execute, and track work packages in MODS Connect WorkPack directly against the 3D model. As per the above-mentioned survey, this is exactly what onsite project teams are asking for.

From the Planning phase in MODS Connect WorkPack, users can open a modal showing all digital work packs for the project, each with:

  • Color-coded status
  • A chain icon linking into the MODS Connect WorkPack module
  • A PDF icon to view the digital work pack
  • A green icon indicating assigned items in the model
  • A key explaining the color coding
  • A pie chart showing overall live project status
    • Orange – In Progress
    • Green – Complete and ready for execution
    • Purple – In Review
  • Color-coded execution status
  • Links to live work packs
  • Digital PDFs
  • Assigned attributes
  • A different color key and execution status pie chart
  • Color-coded joint status
  • A module link back to MODS Connect Integrity
  • Easy access to check sheets
  • Assigned model items
  • Overall joint integrity progress
  • Open the Inspection Test Record (ITR) PDF
  • Click the link icon to open the test pack
  • Switch between test packs using the dropdown

On the right-hand side, users see:

When the Connect Viewer model is color coded, all items associated with every work pack are highlighted for a comprehensive visual overview of project progress:

Clicking a work pack automatically zooms the 3D model to the exact items associated with that pack.

Users can then isolate individual items, hide and restore the full model, and drill down from work pack → job card → step level. Selecting a step isolates the exact model items associated with that task.

When switching to the execution phase in MODS Connect WorkPack, only work packs in an executable state are displayed.

This view includes:

The 3D model now shows only executable items. Clicking a work pack automatically highlights the relevant objects, and users can expand to see job card and step-level status.

Color coding can be applied at different hierarchical levels, allowing teams to visually understand progress across work packs, job cards, and steps.

All progress is updated through MODS Connect WorkPack Execution workflows, giving a live 3D view of onsite progress in Connect Viewer.

Project Joint Quality Assurance

Connect Viewer unites MODS Connect Integrity and MODS Connect Completions in the 3D project model, giving full visibility of joint integrity status.

Users can leverage Connect Viewer to view all project joints in the 3D project environment, complete with:

When the model is color coded, joints are highlighted based on status. Joints can be isolated from surrounding objects so they can be viewed clearly, but still in a 3D context. It’s super easy to navigate the Connect Viewer model to quickly access as much joint integrity information as desired such as signoffs, documents, joint history, constraint types, and images from the field.

Clicking a joint zooms directly to it; and color coding gives a visual snapshot as to whether there are any leaks or constraints. Constraints can be signed off directly from the Connect Viewer model view, or users can jump back into MODS Connect Integrity to review full joint history.

Testing, such as leak tests, hydro tests, and flush packs are managed through MODS Connect Completions. Selecting a test pack highlights assigned joints in the Connect Viewer 3D model so the user can see in a snapshot which joints have or have not yet had essential tests performed. From the Connect viewer mode, users can:

The Connect Viewer model updates instantly to reflect the selected test so the user is always able to orient themselves in the greater context of the project.

Using Connect Viewer for botled-flange integrity management leverages two modules: MODS Connect Integrity and MODS Connect Completions.

Visualizing Everything from Tags to Systems: Commissioning, Completions & Handover

All tags from MODS Connect Completions are synced with the Connect Viewer 3D model such that tags show green dots to indicate assigned model items, with a visible status against each tag. Expanding a tag shows its associated ITRs.

Clicking the model highlights all tagged items. Color coding then displays different completion statuses. Selecting a tag zooms and isolates it in the Connect Viewer 3D model, displaying associated ITRs, and showing whether they are Not Started, In Progress, or Complete.

Directly from Connect Viewer, users can open ITRs via PDF, jump straight into MODS Connect Completions, as well as view history, answer questions, and complete signoffs. Further, a summary showing Complete, In Progress, and Not Started items can be filtered and visualized in the model.

From the Connect Viewer model, users can view the punch list and jump directly into MODS Connect Completions to sign off and access related documents. Test packs are also easily visualized in Connect Viewer, where status is color-coded in the model. Finally, Connect Viewer supports handover by system or milestone. Users can understand the relevant ITRs, punch status, and sign-off progress all at a glance. From the dropdown menu, users can shift from mechanical to system to other handover milestones, ensuring full visibility from construction through commissioning and final handover.

Connect Viewer makes handover so much more manageable, instilling confidence among all asset stakeholders in quality-assured project completion.

Connect Viewer: A difference teams can see

Connect Viewer turns the cacophony of project data into clarity, linking people, process, and progress to the 3D model for safer, faster, and more controlled project execution. As concluded in our client’s in-house survey, it’s a feature onsite teams are hungry for. Yet all stakeholders also benefit from the ability to encapsulate status and progress within the visual context of the broader project's goings-on.

Connect Viewer is an intuitive, user-friendly solution to ensuring that all project information is delivered in as succinct a manner as possible. Talk about efficiency.
